What's Playing: The Last King of Scotland

For March and April, I'm recommending a movie - The Last King of Scotland, which is about Idi Amin's control of Uganda in the seventies - you may remember the film clips of him in the nightly news way back when. James McEvoy is brilliant as the young doctor who is initially enamored of the charismatic Amin and his lavish lifestyle, but comes to realize exactly how barbaric Amin is, and has to somehow flee the coutry without Amin and his goons catching him. Based on real-life events, you will want to see this one if you missed it. Forrest Whitaker won the Oscar for his portrayal of Idi Amin. Note: rated "R" for good reason; older (18+) teens only. Scenes of torture and cruelty, needed for realism but NOT for kids to watch.

To coincide with March Madness, please pick up a copy of The Assist by my friend Neil Swidey. Transporting you both courtside and inside the homes of some of Boston's poorest teens, this is the true account of Charlestown High School's enigmatic basketball team and a coach who won't give up on his players, personally and athletically. You'll want to find Coach O'Brien and give him a hug. Inspiring reading for adults and teens. Neil is a writer for the Boston Globe Magazine, and spent three years on this story, which captured his imagination and his heart. Pick up a copy today, and please visit www.theassist.net for more information.
